The commercial ideal of BMW at its outset was the manufacture andsale of popular vehicles. However, the arrival of the six-cylinder enginetogether with the requirements of the Chancellery (1936), which obligedGerman industrialists of the period to manufacture top products,both with regard to quality and to prestige, led BMW to reconsider itscommercial policy and to orient its production. This led to the birthof the BMW 328, of which the prototype was presented in June 1936,equipped with an 80hp engine. The BMW 328 Roadster was availablefrom dealers from February 1937. It was one of the ‘dream sports cars’ ofits time, with 464 cars built until the beginning of 1940.
